When Families Can’t Count on Federal Support, They Count on Us
At The Community Market, we believe no family should have to wonder where their next meal will come from. Yet this month, as the federal government shutdown continues, many of our Eagle County neighbors are doing just that.
One mother recently shared her story with our team:
“I’ve never asked for help before,” she said quietly. “But I don’t know what else to do.”
Her words echo what many families are feeling right now—uncertainty, anxiety, and the heavy burden of trying to make ends meet.
The Ripple Effect of a Federal Shutdown
Every month, 818 households—representing 1,402 individuals—rely on SNAP benefits in Eagle County, totaling roughly $270,000–$275,000 in food assistance. If benefits are delayed or reduced beyond October, those families will turn to The Community Market for help.
We’ve seen this before. When COVID-era emergency SNAP allotments ended in February 2023, our markets experienced a 28% increase in visits in the months that followed. We’re preparing for a similar surge if the shutdown continues into November.
Standing Strong Together
Thanks to your generosity, when families walk through our doors, they’re met not just with fresh produce and healthy staples—but with compassion and dignity. Your support ensures that shelves stay stocked, fridges stay full, and neighbors feel seen and cared for.
But we also know that food insecurity doesn’t end at our market doors. That’s why we continue to advocate for long-term solutions alongside local partners and leaders.
Last week, we joined the Eagle County Commissioners as they adopted a resolution in support of Propositions LL and MM, two measures on Colorado’s November ballot that will:
- Continue free, nutritious school meals for more than 600,000 students statewide
- Support Colorado farmers and ranchers through local purchasing
- Improve pay and training for school nutrition staff
- Help families save money and reduce childhood hunger
At a time when federal nutrition programs are uncertain, passing LL and MM will help stabilize access to healthy food for children—and reduce pressure on local food pantries like ours.
