SNAP Benefits Update: What It Means for Eagle County Families—and How Your Support Is Making a Difference

Over the past several weeks, families across Colorado have faced deep uncertainty around SNAP benefits. With the federal government shutdown and shifting guidance, many households were left unsure whether they would receive the food assistance they rely on to make ends meet.

This week, Colorado announced it will issue 100% of November SNAP benefits, now that the federal government has reopened. While this brings welcome relief, thousands of families still face instability. New federal rules may require many to reapply or recertify earlier than expected, leaving people unsure whether their benefits will continue or whether another delay is around the corner.

At Eagle Valley Community Foundation, we are hearing from neighbors every day who are scared and confused—wondering if their documents are still valid, how to navigate the process, or how they will feed their families tonight.

The Reality Here at Home

Food insecurity hits especially hard in Eagle County, where the cost of living is more than 40 percent above the state average. Self-sufficiency data shows a single parent with one child must earn over $42 an hour just to cover basic needs.

Families were stretched long before this moment.

Now, the emotional weight is immediate.

One senior shared:

“I’m doing everything I’m supposed to do, but I keep feeling like the rug could be pulled out from under me at any moment.”

Another parent recently asked a home visitor if a teacher might be able to “fill her son’s tummy with healthy food at school because she didn’t have anything at home for him tonight.”

These quiet, heartbreaking moments rarely make headlines, but they show the reality of what uncertainty looks like for many of our neighbors.

Rising Need in Our Community

We are already seeing the impact:

• 14 percent increase in visits to The Community Market in the first two weeks of November
• More families seeking not just food, but guidance and reassurance
• Growing anxiety around benefit access and timing

One father visited the Market with his three children after learning he may need to reapply for SNAP. Overwhelmed and embarrassed, he wasn’t sure how he would get through the week.

When he left with fresh food and the promise of a holiday basket, he paused and said:

“I didn’t want my kids to feel this stress. Today you helped me breathe again.”

That is what community support makes possible.

Your Impact: Hope, Dignity, and Stability

As we move into the holiday season, your support is helping us provide more than meals—you are helping us offer hope.

Together, we are:

• Expanding food purchasing
• Strengthening partnerships across the valley
• Increasing outreach so no one slips through the cracks
• Ensuring every family finds food, stability, and connection

Our holiday baskets, created in partnership with the Salvation Army, are being assembled with intention, abundance, and dignity. They remind families that when systems feel unpredictable, community remains steady.

Looking Ahead

We will continue to keep you updated as the situation evolves and share more about our vision for a stronger Eagle County—one where food, health and wellness, and opportunity are accessible to all through our complimentary programs: The Community Market, MIRA, and Elevar.

We hope you will continue reading our monthly newsletter and staying connected so we can show you the impact of your support and the hope you are helping build.

Thank You

Thank you for standing with families when so much feels unpredictable. Your compassion is steadying people in ways that reach far beyond food. You are helping neighbors feel supported, cared for, and seen.

We are deeply grateful to do this work alongside you.
