Powering Wellness: Connecting Energy, Health, and Community
MIRA approaches wellness holistically, recognizing the connection between mental, financial, and physical health. One area that often goes unseen is our work in energy efficiency. Through our Community Health Navigators, we connect neighbors to energy-saving resources that help reduce costs and improve overall well-being. To expand outreach efforts further, we are leveraging our network of promotoras to expand energy efficiency outreach, equipping promotoras to connect Hispanic/Latino residents with energy-saving resources, cost-reduction programs, and guidance on navigating available services. The Amigas del Condado de Eagle program strengthens peer-to-peer engagement by training trusted community members as promotoras who deliver culturally and linguistically relevant outreach. Working across EVCF’s programs, promotoras help families address immediate needs through The Community Market, access health, social-service, and energy assistance through MIRA, and build long-term economic stability through Elevar. Their trusted relationships and culturally responsive approach ensure that energy outreach is accessible, effective, and informed by real-time community feedback, creating a more sustainable pathway for families to thrive.
We are excited to expand this work through a new partnership with Energy Outreach Colorado (EOC), who has provided a generous grant supporting our energy outreach work. Furthermore, we will leverage our energy efficiency partner, Walking Mountains Science Center and Holy Cross Energy, to reach even more community members, providing tools and support to lower energy use and promote sustainability. Through educational sessions, resource events and access to energy efficiency programs, participants gain knowledge and resources that benefit both their households and the environment.
This effort is designed to educate, empower, and engage our community – linking environmental stewardship with the social determinants of health. Access to clean air, safe water, and a healthy environment directly impacts both physical and mental well-being, while energy efficiency also supports financial stability.
Key connections include:
- Air Quality: Lower energy use reduces emissions, leading to cleaner air and fewer respiratory issues.
- Economic Stability: Reduced utility costs ease financial stress for families.
- Community Engagement: Sustainability efforts foster shared responsibility and stronger social connections.
Sustainability is a shared responsibility. By centering community, culture, and collaboration, this work supports healthier families, stronger communities, and a more resilient future for all.
