Expanding Mental Health Care Through MIRA Esperanza
At Eagle Valley Community Foundation, we believe mental health care should be accessible, culturally responsive, and available close to home. Yet for many individuals and families across Eagle County, accessing care remains difficult. Long waitlists, transportation barriers, language access, cost, stigma, and a shortage of bilingual providers often prevent people from getting the support they need — especially in rural and immigrant communities.
Through MIRA Esperanza, funded by The Colorado Trust, Eagle Valley Community Foundation is expanding mental health services available directly through the MIRA bus and community-based care network. What began as a program focused primarily on individual therapy has now grown into a more comprehensive behavioral health initiative designed to support people and families across every stage of life.
This expansion reflects what our community has shared with us: mental health needs are complex, interconnected, and deeply personal. Healing often requires more than one type of support.
Today, MIRA Esperanza offers individual therapy for adults experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, life transitions, and emotional overwhelm. Services are available in culturally responsive and bilingual settings that help reduce barriers and build trust.
The program has also expanded to include children and youth therapy for ages six and older. Young people are facing increasing mental health challenges, from anxiety and behavioral concerns to trauma and emotional regulation difficulties. Early intervention and family-centered support can make a lifelong difference, helping children build healthy coping skills, resilience, and confidence.
Recognizing that mental health impacts entire households, MIRA Esperanza now also offers couples and relationship support focused on strengthening communication, navigating conflict, and building healthier family dynamics. Strong relationships are foundational to emotional wellness, especially during periods of financial stress, caregiving responsibilities, and major life transitions.
One particularly important area of growth is perinatal and maternal mental health support. Pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and early parenthood can bring immense joy, but they can also bring isolation, anxiety, depression, and emotional exhaustion. Through MIRA Esperanza, parents can access compassionate support during these critical stages of life, helping families feel connected and supported from the very beginning.
In addition to these expanded services, MIRA Esperanza now provides specialized support for a wide range of mental health needs, including:
- Trauma and PTSD
- Depression, anxiety, and chronic stress
- Grief and loss
- Anger management and behavioral challenges
- Bipolar disorder and serious mental health conditions
- Suicidal thoughts and self-harm support
- Caregiver burnout and emotional fatigue
- Domestic violence recovery
- Substance use and recovery support
- Parenting support and family dynamics
- Immigration stress and cultural adjustment
- Cancer-related emotional support
- Building self-esteem and healthy coping skills
For many community members, receiving support through MIRA feels different than entering a traditional clinical setting. The MIRA model brings care directly into neighborhoods and trusted community spaces, reducing stigma while making services more approachable and accessible. By meeting people where they are — physically, emotionally, and culturally — MIRA Esperanza helps individuals feel seen, heard, and supported.
Mental health care is not a luxury. It is a critical part of overall health, family stability, and community wellbeing. Thanks to the support of The Colorado Trust, MIRA Esperanza is helping ensure that more individuals and families across Eagle County can access compassionate care when they need it most.
As needs continue to grow across our region, partnerships and community investment remain essential in building a healthier, more connected Eagle County where every person has the opportunity to heal, thrive, and belong.
