Earth Month: Investing in People, Community, and a Sustainable Future
April is Earth Month—a time to reflect on how we care for our planet and one another. At Eagle Valley Community Foundation, sustainability isn’t a single initiative; it’s a mindset woven through everything we do. Guided by our three pillars—Healthy People, Strong Communities, and Environmental Sustainability—we are building a more resilient, equitable future for the Vail Valley.
At The Community Market (TCM), sustainability starts with a circular approach to food. By rescuing surplus food from local grocers, farmers, and restaurants—and redistributing it to the workers and families who power our community—we reduce waste while increasing access to nutritious food. In 2025 alone, TCM recovered over 600,000 pounds of food, keeping it out of landfills and redirecting it to tables across our valley. This work not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but ensures that valuable resources remain in use, strengthening both environmental and community health.
Our commitment goes beyond food rescue. Through partnerships with local businesses, composting efforts, and the expansion of the TCM Community Garden, we are deepening the connection between people, their food, and the land. Located at LaVenture Farms, the garden will grow nearly 30 varieties of fruits and vegetables this season—from leafy greens to root vegetables—providing fresh, locally grown produce directly to our community. It’s a tangible example of what sustainability looks like in action: local, accessible, and rooted in care.
At the same time, sustainability includes access to essential resources like energy. Through the MIRA Energy Outreach Program, we are helping families navigate rising utility costs and connect to critical supports such as LEAP, energy assistance programs, and efficiency resources. By meeting people where they are—on the MIRA bus and in neighborhoods—we ensure that sustainability is not just about conservation, but about equity. When families can keep their homes warm, reduce energy burdens, and access cost-saving programs, they are better positioned to thrive.
We are also investing in the future through Elevar, our leadership and entrepreneurship program. Elevar supports emerging leaders—many from historically underserved communities—in building and growing businesses that reflect their values. Increasingly, this includes sustainable and community-centered ventures that prioritize environmental responsibility, local sourcing, and long-term impact. By providing access to capital, mentorship, and education, Elevar is helping to grow a local economy that is both inclusive and sustainable.
Sustainability is not just about what we preserve—it’s about what we create. It’s about ensuring that every individual has access to the resources they need, every family can thrive, and every community can build toward a healthier future.
We’re grateful to partners like LaVenture Farms and the many local businesses and volunteers who make this work possible.
