Penny Wilson: Turning Compassion Into Action

When Penny Wilson sees a need, she doesn’t wait for someone else to step in. She brings people together, finds a way forward, and turns a simple idea into meaningful impact for her neighbors.

A donor, volunteer, and longtime community champion, Penny has dedicated her time and energy to strengthening the Eagle County community through service. Her commitment to helping others has taken many forms; from supporting The Community Market as a donor and volunteer, to connecting new groups of passionate volunteers to the fight against hunger.

When Penny moved to the valley twelve years ago, she was surprised to learn that Eagle and Pitkin counties have some of the highest rates of food insecurity in Colorado — despite being two of the wealthiest counties in the state.

“That’s always stayed with me,” Penny shared.

A few years ago, while attending a Rotary International convention, Penny discovered Meals of Hope, a volunteer-powered food packaging program designed to bring communities together to address hunger. She immediately knew it was something Eagle County needed.

“I spotted a Meals of Hope booth at the convention and knew immediately we had to bring this to Eagle County,” Penny said.

That vision became reality on June 18, when Penny helped bring together 60 volunteers who packaged 10,000 servings of food for neighbors across the community. The event was a powerful reminder of what can happen when people come together around a shared mission and it was also a whole lot of fun.

Penny was not alone in bringing this vision to life. Her husband, John, has been by her side throughout her service journey, helping support and organize community events and lending his time wherever needed. Together, Penny and John have demonstrated the impact of partnership, not only in their own lives, but in the way they show up for their neighbors.

“And they had a blast doing it,” Penny said of the Meals of Hope event. “This is just the beginning. We’re already planning more Meals of Hope events for the future.”

Penny’s commitment to service extends beyond one event. Through her involvement with the Daughters of the American Revolution, she has helped connect new volunteers and community members to The Community Market’s mission. She also serves as a leader with the Vail Edwards Rotary Impact Group, bringing fellow Rotarians into the work of supporting local families facing food insecurity.

Through each organization she touches, Penny has a gift for turning relationships into action. She understands that community is built by people who are willing to step forward, invite others in, and make a difference together.

Whether she is organizing volunteers, building partnerships, or simply showing up to help, Penny embodies the belief that lasting change starts with individuals who are willing to act.
