Meet Marco Varela: Leading the Next Chapter of Elevar

As Eagle Valley Community Foundation continues to grow the impact of Elevar, we are excited to welcome Marco Varela as the program’s new Program Manager.

Elevar was created to support emerging entrepreneurs and community leaders with the capital, curriculum, mentorship, and community connections needed to build thriving businesses and stronger futures. As the program enters its next chapter, Marco brings a deep commitment to self-reliance, leadership development, and community empowerment that aligns closely with the heart of Elevar’s mission.

Originally from Mexico City, Marco grew up in a family where education and service were deeply valued. Inspired by his mother, an elementary school teacher, he developed an early passion for learning and helping others build opportunities for themselves and their families.

“I’ve spent my career in nonprofit and humanitarian work helping people meet their basic needs and build more self-reliant lives,” Marco shared. “Elevar gives me the opportunity to continue making a meaningful impact in the community.”

Marco brings an extraordinary depth of experience to the role. He holds a Master’s degree in Business, doctorates in Education and Executive Leadership, an Associate Degree in Applied Business Management from Brigham Young University, and certifications in entrepreneurship, commercial leadership, fitness, and nutrition.

Professionally, he has more than 15 years of experience in human resources with companies including Toyota and Sodexo. He also spent 13 years serving as a Welfare and Self-Reliance Manager and Humanitarian Project Manager for LDS Charities, collaborating with organizations such as UNICEF, Save the Children, Catholic Charities, Cáritas, the Mexican Ministry of Health, and UNHCR.

His work has consistently focused on connecting individuals and families with the tools, education, and resources needed to create lasting change in their own lives.

“What excites me most about this role is the opportunity to collaborate with a community-focused organization like Eagle Valley Community Foundation,” Marco said. “I want to help create pathways for participants not only to become entrepreneurs, but to grow into self-reliant, empowered individuals capable of becoming leaders in their communities.”

As Elevar continues to expand its impact across Eagle County, Marco’s leadership will help strengthen the program’s ability to support entrepreneurs from all backgrounds — particularly those who have historically faced barriers to accessing business education, mentorship, and startup resources.

Through weekly bilingual classes in partnership with Colorado Mountain College, mentorship opportunities, startup funding, and community workshops, Elevar has already supported dozens of entrepreneurs in launching and growing businesses that strengthen the local economy and reflect the diverse cultures and talents of Eagle County.

“Marco brings a unique combination of global humanitarian experience, educational leadership, and deep passion for empowering people,” said Melina Valsecia-Monreal. “We are excited for the vision, compassion, and expertise he will bring to Elevar as we continue building pathways for entrepreneurship and economic mobility in our community.”

Please join us in welcoming Marco to the Eagle Valley Community Foundation team and the Elevar family.
