Introducing SWAP at The Community Market

At The Community Market, we believe that access to food is just the beginning. True food security means having the information, dignity, and choice to select foods that nourish your family and support long-term health. That’s why we’re excited to introduce the SWAP system — a new, easy-to-use labeling tool designed to support healthier shopping.

What is SWAP?

SWAP stands for Supporting Wellness at Pantries, a nutrition ranking system developed by Feeding America and adopted locally through our partnership with Food Bank of the Rockies. SWAP uses simple, color-coded shelf tags to help shoppers quickly understand the nutritional value of foods available in the Market.

Each item is categorized into one of three colors:

  • Green – Choose Often
  • Yellow – Choose Sometimes
  • Red – Choose Rarely

The system looks at key nutrients like saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar — offering a clear, research-based way to compare similar products at a glance.

Why SWAP Matters in Eagle County

In Eagle County, many of the families we serve face higher rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Access to fresh produce, lean proteins, and whole grains plays a powerful role in prevention and overall wellness.

At The Community Market, we already prioritize:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Dairy and protein access
  • Culturally relevant foods
  • A customer-choice shopping model

SWAP enhances this work by giving families clear, accessible nutrition information — without removing choice or creating shame. Our goal is empowerment, not restriction.

Protecting Dignity While Promoting Health

The Community Market operates with a deep commitment to dignity. Families shop our Market just like a grocery store, selecting items that reflect their traditions, preferences, and household needs.

SWAP does not eliminate foods from our shelves. Instead, it provides helpful guidance — especially for families managing high blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes — so they can make informed decisions based on their personal health goals.

A Community-Wide Investment in Wellness

Introducing SWAP is part of our broader commitment to addressing food insecurity and health disparities across Eagle County. As we continue expanding access through:

  • Our Edwards and Gypsum storefronts
  • Mobile Markets
  • Home Delivery Program
  • Robust food rescue partnerships

—we are also strengthening the quality of the food available and the education surrounding it.

Because food is more than calories.
Food is prevention.
Food is connection.
Food is health.

We are grateful to our partners and volunteers who are helping us roll out this system and to our shoppers who continue to trust The Community Market as a place of welcome, nourishment, and belonging.

Together, we are building a healthier community — one choice at a time.
