Empowering Women through the MIRA Program Celebrating Women’s Health Month

As we transition into the busy back-to-school season, it’s important to recognize the unique challenges that women, particularly mothers, face during this time. The demands of preparing children for a new school year can amplify stress levels, making it essential to focus on women’s health and well-being. This Women’s Health Month, the MIRA program is proud to spotlight initiatives that support women in our community—addressing everything from menopause to maternal health, while also tackling the significant health disparities that affect Hispanic women.

Back-to-School Stress: Supporting Mothers in Our Community

Back-to-school season is a time of excitement, but it can also bring heightened stress for mothers managing the demands of their households. The juggling act of coordinating school schedules, extracurricular activities, and family needs often leaves little time for self-care. Through the MIRA program, we are committed to providing resources and support that help alleviate this stress and promote overall well-being for mothers during this busy period including free backpacks and back-to-school vaccines.

Menopause Events: Navigating Life’s Transitions

Menopause is a natural stage in a woman’s life, yet it often comes with challenges that are not widely discussed. This Women’s Health Month, MIRA is hosting a series of events focused on menopause education and support. These events aim to empower women with knowledge about managing symptoms, understanding the physical and emotional changes that come with menopause, and connecting with others who are navigating the same journey. By creating a safe space for discussion and learning, we hope to reduce the stigma surrounding menopause and provide valuable support to women in our community.

Launching Our Perinatal Navigation Programs

We are excited to announce the launch of our perinatal navigation programs, designed to support women from pregnancy through postpartum. Our perinatal navigator, Sofia, will work closely with expecting and new mothers to ensure they have access to the healthcare services, resources, and support they need for a healthy pregnancy and beyond. The program is targeted to families with children up to age 3.

Addressing Health Disparities Among Hispanic Women

Health disparities remain a significant issue, particularly for Hispanic women who face higher risks of certain health conditions. According to the Office of Minority Health, Hispanic women are 40% more likely to be diagnosed with cervical cancer and 20% more likely to die from it compared to non-Hispanic white women. Additionally, Hispanic women are more likely to experience complications during pregnancy and childbirth, partly due to limited access to prenatal care.

These statistics underscore the importance of culturally competent healthcare and targeted programs that address the unique needs of Hispanic women. The MIRA program is committed to closing these gaps by offering services that are accessible, affordable, and tailored to the community we serve.
