Connecting Community to Community: A Win for Healthy Meals & Stronger Families
At The Community Market, we are deeply committed to ensuring every individual in Eagle County has access to wholesome, nutritious food and the support needed to thrive. So when Colorado voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition LL and Proposition MM on Nov. 4, 2025, we celebrated — because this is more than a policy win. It’s a boost for children, families, and the health of our entire region.
Why This Matters
These two measures will:
- Fund free meals for all public-school students in Colorado — removing the stigma of “free or reduced” lunch lines and ensuring every child eats regardless of household income. Colorado Public Radio
- Provide raises or stipends for cafeteria workers, and grants to schools to purchase fresh, local ingredients. Colorado Public Radio
- Potentially strengthen the safety net for SNAP benefits and food access resources if surplus funds remain. Colorado Public Radio
For families in rural or mountain regions like Eagle County, where food costs and transportation add extra strain, these policies echo the mission of The Community Market and EVCF: bridging access, supporting dignity, and fostering a stronger, healthier community.
Impact in Our Region
Here’s what we’re particularly excited about:
- Universal meals = inclusive schools: Students who previously skipped breakfast or lunch because of cost concerns are now fully included. The ballot measure supporters cited that school officials reported many more kids eating lunch — in fact about 30% more statewide. Colorado Public Radio
- Local food link: The commitment to fresh, local ingredients aligns directly with The Community Market’s customer-choice food-pantry model and our focus on fresh produce, meat and dairy. Proposition MM’s grant component will help schools purchase from local farmers and producers — opening up potential partnerships and supply chain opportunities for our network. Colorado Public Radio
- Reduced stigma, increased dignity: As noted in the CPR News article, many children felt embarrassed by being singled out for free lunch. Universal access removes that barrier — and when children are fed, they are better able to learn and participate. Colorado Public Radio
What This Means for EVCF & The Community Market
Our purpose at EVCF is to connect community to community, and this statewide policy supports that goal on a large scale. Here’s how:
- We will continue to support the mobile market and pantry programs that bring fresh food and health education directly to underserved seniors and families in Eagle County. The enhanced school-meal program helps stabilize the overall local food ecosystem, meaning families have consistent access — at home and at school.
- We will explore partnerships with local schools, food producers, and The Community Market to link school procurement with local farms and vendors, reinforcing regional food economy resilience.
- We will integrate this milestone into our outreach and communications: celebrating the win with our donors and volunteers; showcasing how collective advocacy pays off; and reinforcing the idea that when we lift up policy, program, and place together, everyone benefits.
A Future of Shared Success
Passage of Propositions LL and MM is an important step — not the finish line. We at EVCF and The Community Market will stay focused on:
- Implementation: Ensuring the free-meals program is operational and effective in Eagle County schools.
- Local linkages: Facilitating how local producers and the food-access network can benefit and contribute.
- Measurement & telling the story: We will monitor how this policy shift affects our community — food security, student health, academic participation, equity of access — and share those stories with you.
Thank You to Our Community
We are deeply grateful to the families, volunteers, donors, community partners, and school staff who advocate for access, equity, and health every day. This victory belongs to all of us. As we continue our work, we invite you to stay engaged: volunteer with The Community Market, support fresh-food donors, talk to your local schools about food and sourcing, and keep sharing the message that everyone deserves access to good food, no matter their ZIP code or income.
